John is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who received his undergraduate degree in psychology in 2004 from UCLA, then he went on to earn his master’s degree in counseling psychology in 2007 from California Lutheran University. He currently works in private practice along side Dr. Charles Hollingsworth M.D., adult and child psychiatrist, in Oxnard.
John works with individuals, couples, and families ages 13 and up who are seeking help for a variety of issues including mood and anxiety disorders, relationship difficulties, and personal growth concerns. One of his primary specialties is helping clients with histories of trauma and those who struggle with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). He has treated many clients who are survivors of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, as well as military veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan who have come back with PTSD. Ask John about EMDR Therapy (Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and whether it is a good treatment option for you.
Additionally, John specializes in treating clients who battle with substance abuse and addiction. John has been through his own journey to find sobriety and recovery in his life, so when he works with this population of clients he is able to come from a place of real understanding and empathy.
Overall, John views his clients as a whole, rather than focusing through a narrow lens of a specific diagnosis or label such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, etc. He understands his clients are made up of a complex system of interacting parts that all play a role in creating their current state. Some of these parts include nutrition, exercise, familial and peer relations, past experiences (traumatic and positive), biology, and genetics.
